Octagon Tile

Octagon Tile is the octagon-and-square floor tiling — the pattern of every old bathroom, hotel lobby and Victorian hallway. A grid of octagons with a small square dropped into each interstice between four of them, all separated by an even groove. It is one of the few classical tilings that stays legible at any scale, which is why it survived a century of interior fashion. Every tile is real geometry generated from the face's own bounding box at regeneration time, so the floor re-lays itself whenever the panel changes size. Two numbers drive it, and they stay in proportion on their own: Tile pitch is the octagon centre spacing, and the octagon radius and the little interstitial square are both derived from it and the groove, so the tiling stays gap-consistent as you scale. Groove is the grout width between tiles, Rotation spins the field — 45 degrees stands the little squares on point, a noticeably more decorative read — and the Relief mode does the rest: engrave cuts the grooves and leaves the tiles flush, emboss raises them, which is the one that reads as genuinely inlaid tilework. Keep Groove at roughly twice your nozzle width — around 0.8 mm on a 0.4 mm nozzle — so the grout lines resolve as real channels. Depth of 0.6 to 1.2 mm is plenty; the tiling reads by its outline, so extra depth buys little. At small pitch the interstitial square is dropped automatically when it would go non-positive, so the pattern simplifies to plain octagons instead of breaking.
