Orientation Steps

3 min readUpdated Aug 2026

Use an orientation step to turn a body without moving it anywhere in particular. Add one from Add positioning step in a Transform.

Angle between two axes, or two faces

Axis angle to axis and Face angle to plane are the same idea on different geometry: pick something on the body that moves, pick something to measure against, and choose the relation.

Relation
Setting What you get
Parallel The two point the same way
Opposite They point against each other
Perpendicular Square to each other
At an angle Exactly the angle you type

Neither step translates the body. Axis angle turns it about the moving axis's own origin; face angle turns the normals to match.

Rotate about axis

Pick an Axis and type an Angle. The axis can be an edge, a cylindrical face, a reference axis or a world axis.

Expand this step and a violet arc appears on the body: drag it to set the angle by eye, or type into the pill that comes with it. Enter commits what you type; Escape leaves it as it was.

Turning a body where it standsA vertical edge of the block for the axis, 55° for the angle, and the block swings about its own corner.

Lay face on plate

Pick My face and the body turns until that face points straight down, then drops to the build plate. Spin turns it about the vertical once it is down, which is how you aim a part on the plate before slicing.

Flip over a face

Pick a face and the body turns 180° about a line lying in it, hinging on that face. Hinge chooses which line.

This is the step for turning a part over to work on the other side. It keeps the part the same part: a left-hand bracket stays left-handed.

Mirror across a plane

Pick a plane and the body is reflected through it. This one does not keep the part the same part. A left-hand bracket comes back right-handed. That is the point when you need the other one of a pair, and a mistake when you wanted it turned over.

Reach for Flip over a face to turn something over, and for Mirror across a plane to make its opposite.
